As someone who has lived in Florida my entire life, packing for summer here is all about being practical, comfortable and prepared! Florida summers are filled with sunshine, days at the beaches, and adventures. However, the heat, humidity, and occasional rain can make dressing both comfortably and stylishly a bit of a challenge and catch visitors off guard!

I’ve curated a guide to help you navigate what to wear in Florida in summer and what to pack for Florida in the summer. These are the items I wear myself and recommend to friends when they visit.

Whether you are headed to the beach, exploring theme parks, sightseeing in Miami, this guide will have you ready to visit the Sunshine State during summertime!

If you are going to Florida in another season here is a Florida Packing List For Every Season

Florida Summer Weather: What to Expect

Florida summers are hot and sunny, with high humidity and frequent afternoon showers (especially in July and August. ). Expect temperatures ranging from 80°F to 95°F (27°C to 35°C).

Whether you’re lounging on the beaches of Miami, exploring Orlando’s theme parks, or enjoying a weekend in the Florida Keys, knowing how to dress for summer in Florida is key!

When planning what to were in Florida in summer, I highly recommend lightweight, breathable outfits, comfortable sandals or sneakers, and weather-proof essentials like an umbrella or quick-dry shoes.

☀️ If It’s Hot and Sunny (Very Common):

Temperatures during Florida’s summer often climb into the high 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit (30–35°C) with strong sunshine.

• What to Wear: Lightweight, breathable clothing like linen dresses, cotton shorts, or lightweight tops. I always suggest a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen. Don’t forget a water bottle!

🌦️If It’s Humid and Muggy (Almost Always):

Florida’s humidity can make the heat feel even more intense, especially near the coast or in urban areas like Miami or the Everglades.

• What to Wear: Loose-fitting, moisture-wicking fabrics that won’t cling to your skin, like linen or performance materials. A battery-operated handheld fan is a game-changer.

☔If It’s Rainy (Daily Showers Are Likely):

Florida’s summer afternoons are famous for their sudden, short-lived thunderstorms, especially in the central and northern parts of the state.

• What to Wear: Pack a lightweight, water-resistant jacket or carry a compact umbrella in your day bag. I highly suggest sandals!

🌡️If It’s Cooler in the Evenings (Less Common but Possible):

While most Florida evenings are warm, occasional cooler breezes can make temperatures dip into the 70s or even 60s Fahrenheit (15–25°C), especially in coastal or northern regions.

• What to Wear: Bring a lightweight cardigan, denim jacket, or shawl for evenings spent outdoors. A jean jacket or lightweight sweater is all you need.

Essential Packing List for Florida summer clothes

When preparing for a trip to Florida in the summer, packing strategically is key to enjoying the Sunshine State. Here’s is my essential packing list items that are must-haves when looking for what to wear in Florida in summer!

Lightweight, Breathable Clothing (Linen and Cotton)

Florida’s summer heat and humidity can be intense, and breathable fabrics like linen and cotton help keep you cool by allowing air to circulate. I love sundresses, flowy cotton tops, and loose-fit shorts.

Comfortable Sandals and Sneakers

For what shoes to wear for Florida in Summer, Florida involves a lot of walking, whether you’re exploring theme parks, strolling along beaches, sightseeing in cities like Miami or Tampa, or exploring the springs and state parks.

Sandals (my favorite are crocs or birkenstocks) are ideal for the heat, while sneakers provide support for long days on your feet. I also suggest a pair of water shoes if looking at what to wear in Florida in summer and you plan on doing water activities.

Dresses for Day and Night

Pack a mix of lightweight sundresses and flowy maxi dresses in breathable fabrics like linen and cotton. These are perfect for sightseeing, dinner, or even beach days.

Wide-Brimmed Hat

Florida’s sun is strong, especially in summer. It is called the SUNSHINE state for a reason!! A wide-brimmed hat protects your face and shoulders from the sun and is a MUST what to wear in Florida in summer.

Sunglasses and Sunscreen

The Florida sun can be blinding, especially near water. Sunglasses with polarized lenses are a must if visiting the beach or out on the water.

Florida’s UV index is consistently high in the summer, making sunburn a real risk. Applying sunscreen regularly!

Swimwear and Quick-Dry Cover-Ups

Florida’s beaches, waterparks, natural springs and pools are highlights of any trip, so swimwear is non-negotiable. Quick-dry cover-ups transition easily from the beach to a casual restaurant or activity.

Compact Umbrella or Water-Resistant Jacket

Portable Fan or Cooling Towel

The muggy heat and humidity can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re waiting in theme park lines or walking in the sun. A portable fan or cooling towel offers instant relief and makes a huge difference in your comfort in the perfect addition to your summer outfit ideas for Florida!
